Fairytale chemistry at the children's academy

Children were able to learn about chemistry in a playful way as part of Christmas-themed fairy tales at the HSZG.

The Children's Academy at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences gives children aged eight to twelve an interesting insight into various scientific disciplines. The chemistry department of the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences makes an annual pre-Christmas contribution to this. Interesting chemistry experiments are presented to the audience, which are integrated into an exciting storyline and acted out.

While the children were enchanted by the witchcraft of Bibi Blocksberg in December 2014, the Christmas-themed fairy tale of Snow White, the dwarves and Santa Claus was on the program on 4 December 2015. The main roles of the play, Snow White and the dwarves, were quickly found among the children. Accompanied by the narrating Santa Claus, Snow White made her way to the dwarves' house. Once there, she defied the evil queen, enjoyed a delicious ice cream and a refreshing cola and marveled at a series of impressive show experiments. The budding scientists were even allowed to take part in some of the experiments themselves. Finally, each child received a small Christmas present and was able to marvel at a fiery and smoky final firework display.

The experiments for this somewhat different kind of lecture are tried out, prepared and carried out by students on the Bachelor's degree course in Chemistry and the Master's degree course in Chemistry and Energy. For the performance last December, a big thank you goes to: Katja Klötzer, Eva-Maria Kosubke, Martin Glaß, Alexander Fürll, Johannes Heller and Daniel Rathmann.

The Chemistry Department would like to thank all the children and supervisors for their great interest in the event and is already looking forward to the next Christmas show lecture for the Children's Academy.
