Lions Club Görlitz visits Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

On March 17, 2015, the members of the Görlitz Lions Club, led by their current president, our rector, Prof. Dr. phil. Friedrich Albrecht, met at the Faculty of Mechanical.

In addition to club activities, the focus was on touring selected laboratories in the fields of Mechanical Engineering and energy technology. The visitors gained insight into the laboratories for production engineering, manufacturing metrology, and the Thermochemical Test Field (TCV). Here, under the expert guidance of the research staff, Mr. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Bert Salomo and Mr. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Martin Kurz, gain a lasting impression of the current state of research activities in the field of wood gasification plants for power generation in the power range below 100 kW.

In the Production Engineering Laboratory, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerlinde Kretschmar and Mr. Ralph Heidrich, Dipl.-Ing. (FH), simulated and demonstrated in practice a complete production process —from the retrieval of raw parts to the storage of a fully assembled product. The complex laboratory equipment, including the two articulated-arm robots, was put to impressive use during the demonstration.

In the Manufacturing Measurement Technology Laboratory , the recently acquired optical 3D scanner in particular caught our guests’ attention. Mr. M.A., Diplom-Ing. (FH) Martin Sturm and Mr. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Wolfgang Meinck demonstrated to the highly knowledgeable and interested audience how this state-of-the-art measurement system can be used to capture a complex plastic component from the automotive industry in three dimensions within just a few minutes and evaluate it against specific requirements.

The members of the Görlitz Lions Club expressed great recognition and were impressed by the capabilities and activities of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in research and modern engineering education. Among them are many business leaders from the regional economy, for whom the performance of our university is particularly important.
