Attention reading foxes! A BücherboXX for Zittau!

As part of a project by students at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, a BücherboXX will open on September 1 at the Zittau market square. A BücherboXX is a mini street library—completely redesigned from a discarded phone booth—located in a public cultural space, freely accessible to everyone, and intended for the free exchange of books. The BücherboXX’s motto is: Take a book, bring a book, read a book!

This student project aims to promote cultural interaction in the city of Zittau and serve as a catalyst for a permanent BücherboXX in Zittau. The concept of book swapping is not new, but implementing it in a public cultural space is a first for Zittau.

During the trial period, the students will conduct a usage analysis and develop an action plan for the project’s continuation.
The project is geared toward sustainability: Books that have been read can find a new reader. In addition, the refurbished phone booth is equipped with a solar panel to ensure energy-self-sufficient operation for the nighttime interior lighting and neon sign.
The Zittau BücherboXX is to be tested at two locations, first at the market, where it will be accessible from September 1 to October 18, and then on the upper part of Bautzener Straße from October 19 to November 30, inviting visitors to linger.
The students are supported in this effort by the City of Zittau, the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, the Hillersche Villa Zittau, INBAK Berlin, and a team of volunteers associated with the Zittau Literary Circle.
The grand opening, attended by the mayor of Zittau, the Rector of HSZG, and other dignitaries, will take place on September 1, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the market square in Zittau.
