Teaching award in student hands

The university plans to award the 2023 Teaching Award in accordance with the university's new regulations governing the awarding of teaching awards.

Since 2015, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the university’s Friends Association, has regularly awarded a prize for exceptional dedication and outstanding achievements in teaching at HSZG.

Following extensive discussions with the deans of studies, the faculties, and the Student Council over the past few months, the process was modernized by Dr. Sommer and the Vice President for Education and International Affairs, Professor Keil. The key changes pertain to the nomination process and the composition of the selection committee. Accordingly, in the future, only students of the university will be eligible to submit nominations. Another notable feature is that, in the future, student members will hold the majority of votes on the seven-member independent selection committee. Strengthening opportunities for student participation was a key priority for the University Executive Board and the Senate. Another new development is an online nomination platform, which is currently being set up.

As Vice President for Education and International Affairs, it is very important to me that our students are at the center of our university’s processes. I am very pleased that, with the amendment to the Teaching Award Regulations, the sole right to nominate candidates for the Teaching Award now lies in their hands. The majority vote on the selection committee also reflects our strong commitment to ensuring that students are at the heart of our university community and that their voices carry significant weight.

Prof. Dr. Sophia Keil, Vice President for Education and International Affairs

What has remained unchanged is that the Friends of the University Association graciously provides a substantial cash prize—something that by no means can be taken for granted—and that both individual faculty members and groups of faculty members can be nominated. The criteria for reviewing nominations and selecting a winner have also remained the same.

The university plans to announce the 2023 Teaching Award shortly in accordance with the university’s new Teaching Award Regulations. Dear students, stay tuned. After the upcoming New Year, there will be a call for nominations for this year’s Teaching Award. You are welcome to start thinking about deserving faculty members now and to talk to your fellow students to find supporters. We look forward to lively participation!

Thank you very much!

We would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Friends of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. It is this organization that has made—and continues to make—past and future award ceremonies possible.
