As part of the project “New Media to Support Self-Organized E-Learning Processes in STEM Fields” (funded from September 2016 to August 2018 by the European Social Fund), innovative approaches were developed, tested, and implemented to better harness the potential of e-learning. The focus was on measures to promote self-organized learning processes and various key competencies (media literacy, learning skills, etc.), which are becoming increasingly important in the context of lifelong learning. At the heart of the project is the integrated workshop program “thermoSOL.”

This teaching-and-learning concept aims to support students during the self-directed learning phases of their individual academic disciplines and to help them overcome their personal learning challenges. With thermoSOL, students practice—as part of a module in their regular curriculum—the targeted selection and application of learning materials, the independent application and review of acquired knowledge, and the identification of necessary actions to achieve learning objectives, in combination with learner communication in a virtual environment. The newly developed approaches were tested in cooperation with the Department of Technical Thermodynamics (Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. H.-J. Kretschmar).
