"Life on the border"
The public lecture series looks at the topic of "borders" from different perspectives.
Dr. Cordula Endter and Dr. Julia Gabler from the Faculty of Social Sciences invite students and the interested public to the lecture series “Life on the Border.” Here, a border does not refer solely to a geographical line where two states or countries meet.
“The relevance and ubiquity of borders are at the heart of this lecture series,” explains Dr. Julia Gabler. “The series examines borders from various perspectives—including intergenerational, intercultural, individual, economic, ecological, and political borders. But it also addresses where life reaches its limits or takes place at those limits, and focuses on the lives of people in border regions. Just as in Lausitz, border regions are characterized by specific forms of mobility, social cohesion, and the experience of change, ” she says. Not least, Lausitz—that is, the cross-border region of Lower and Upper Lausitz—is experiencing new shifts in its boundaries due to the structural changes currently underway.
Through academic lectures and practical examples, the series explores how life at the border offers resources and potential that often remain invisible in current discourses.
The lecture series “Life on the Border” will take place as part of the East-West College during the summer semester of 2022:
- starting March 24, 2022,
- every other Thursday, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.,
- hybrid via edudip and in Görlitz at the Blue Box G I/1.01
It will be opened on March 24, 2022, by Dr. Cordula Endter and Dr. Julia Gabler. The complete program is available here.
The event series is open to the general public and was developed in collaboration with the Master's degree programmes in Social Gerontology and management of social change.
Registration is not required, but you are welcome to register through the VHS.
