Team Rectorate-University challenges the mayors of Zittau and Görlitz.

The president of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kratzsch, didn’t hesitate for long when the call for the pedometer challenge—directed at the university’s staff and students—landed in his inbox. We’re in! Together with the Vice President for Education and International Affairs, Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Sophia Keil; the Vice President for Research, Prof. Dr. phil. habil. Raj Kollmorgen; and Chancellor Karin Hollstein, he formed a four-person presidential team. A quick phone call was all it took, and he was able to quickly convince the mayors of Görlitz and Zittau to join forces as another four-person team. For the first time in the history of the pedometer challenge, there will be a leadership ranking.

"By participating, we want to demonstrate the university’s connection to the cities where it is located. Sports bring people together! With this in mind, as representatives of a shared region, we want to highlight our close relationship," explains Rector Alexander Kratzsch.

The pedometer challenge is held annually as part of the Health and Environment Days at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The Health and Environment Days, which have been held since 2016, take place in cooperation with the city of Zittau. Even though they cannot be held as usual this year, that is no reason for Eric Schön to skip the pedometer challenge held as part of the event:

"Maintaining social distancing and hygiene measures is the best way to stay fit and healthy at the moment. But running, climbing stairs and going for a walk are also good ways to incorporate exercise into our office, home office and study routines. Exercise in the fresh air promotes physical and mental well-being and a healthy immune system." Mr. Schön coordinates the competition on behalf of the HSZG.

The rules:

  • Steps count from June 22 to 26, 2020.
  • Seven staff teams each from the city administration of Zittau and the HSZG (ZI and GR) will take part.
  • Three student teams per faculty, 7 teams in total, will participate.
  • Each team consists of 2 people.
  • New in 2020: Leadership evaluation - a team of four rectors against a team of four mayors (Mr. Ursu + Partner*in and Mr. Zenker + Partner*in)
  • The institution with the most steps wins the personnel ranking.
  • There is a separate rectorate-mayor ranking
  • The faculty with the most steps wins the student ranking.

The defending champion from 2019 is HSZG with a total of 1,141,666 steps.

We wish all participants lots of fun with their daily exercise and will report on our social media channels.
