Power plant technology made in Germany

The Institute of Process Engineering, Process Automation and Measurement Technology was represented at the Power Plant Technology Colloquium.

The Nuclear Engineering/Soft Computing Division and the Measurement Technology/Process Automation Division of the Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM) were represented by Dr. André Seeliger, Ms. Jana Hänel, and Mr. Torsten Klette at the 49th Power Plant Technology Colloquium in Dresden.

The Power Plant Technology Colloquium (KWTK) is one of the most important scientific events in the field of modern energy and power plant technology. Once a year, representatives from industry, academia, and politics meet to discuss current issues in the field of energy and power plant engineering.

The Nuclear Engineering/Soft Computing (KTSC) department was represented with a poster presentation on the topic “Tool for Diagnosing/Predicting the Condition of Machine Transformers.” The presentation covered the research results of a joint project between Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and Lausitz Energie Kraftwerke AG (LEAG).

The Department of Measurement Technology/Process Automation (MTPA) was also represented with a poster presentation on the topic “Dynamic Simulation of a Constant-Pressure Displacement Storage Tank Using the ATHLET Simulation Code for Increasing the Flexibility of Thermal Power Plants.”

The presentation features current research results from the HOTHES project (High-Transient Thermal Energy Storage System for Plant-Friendly and Energy-Efficient Flexibilization of Thermal Power Plants), funded by the Free State of Saxony and the European Union, at the Zittau Power Plant Laboratory. The goal of the project is to contribute to the flexibility of thermal energy conversion plants through the integration of thermal energy storage systems.

A well-attended event within the KWTK was the Nuclear Energy Symposium. A presentation by Dr. Holger Kryk (HZDR) (co-author: Dr. Seeliger (IPM)) addressed chemical effects during coolant loss accidents in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The presentation referenced many nuclear safety research projects that were carried out as part of the long-standing collaboration between the IPM/KTSC Division, TU Dresden (TUD), and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). The presentation highlighted the expertise and test facilities at the laboratory and semi-technical scales, such as the Zittau flow channel (ZSW). The ZSW is currently being used at the IPM, among other things, for long-term investigations of corrosion processes that can occur during a coolant loss accident in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) containment.

The numerous questions asked following the presentation suggested that the topic met with very keen interest among the audience.

The 49th Power Plant Technology Colloquium once again impressively demonstrated the industry’s research and development capabilities. Power plant technology Made in Germany.
