At CircEcon, our mission is to establish a globally unique technology pool for the circular economy at the Schwarze Pumpe Industrial Park, located in the heart of the Lausitz coalfield. We are carrying out this project in collaboration with four Saxon universities—TU Dresden, TU BA Freiberg, TU Chemnitz, and HSZG.

Key objectives of the project include the development, construction, commissioning, and initial operation of several pilot-scale facilities designed to help difficult, previously unsolved steps in comprehensive and sustainable recycling achieve an industrial breakthrough. The HSZG’s focus is on the construction and operation of the pilot plant section for manual and automatic disassembly, material sorting, and parts of the thermal recovery process. Beyond the scope of the position advertised here, the partners—BA Freiberg University of Technology, Dresden University of Technology, and Chemnitz University of Technology—are addressing and implementing additional topics related to the circular economy at the site.

The position specifically includes the following responsibilities:

• Assisting in the preparation of investment activities (funding from the InvKG) at the site of the CircEcon Campus Spreetal/Schwarze Pumpe pilot plants by Participating in the planning of pilot plants and the preparation of corresponding specifications,
• direct supervision and monitoring of construction, assembly, and commissioning work to ensure it is completed on time and to the required quality standards, including interface management with subcontractors and scientific partners,
• equal representation of the interests of all HSZG organizational units involved in CircEcon, specifically the affiliated institutes ZIRKON and IPM and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering,
• specifically, the planning and establishment of the analytical laboratory,
• Acquisition of funding to enable operational use starting in 2027,
• Networking to integrate the project into the HSZG’s internal and external research landscape, as well as with existing and potentially new companies in the CircEcon campus region,
• Supervising student assistants and thesis projects within the project,
• Reporting to project leaders, documentation, and assisting with the presentation of project progress.

The following knowledge and skills are required:

• A university degree in an engineering field such as civil engineering, process engineering, energy engineering, Engineering Management, or a comparable field,
• Several years of professional experience and specialized knowledge
  • in supervising and coordinating the construction of building facilities and managing complex projects,
  • dealing with external contractors and service providers,
  • procuring test facilities and equipment,
  • for the design and planning of technical facilities,
• strong communication skills and an interdisciplinary mindset,
• good written and oral communication skills,
• strong self-management and problem-solving skills, as well as organizational talent,
• Class B driver’s license.

In addition, the following are desirable:

• experience in coaching and leading teams,
• practical experience in research work, as well as knowledge of the procedures and operations of research institutions,
• Practical English skills,
• Knowledge of economic and sociopolitical developments in the Lausitz coalfield region of Schwarze Pumpe.
