Sound through the pre-Christmas season

The spontaneous idea to serenade the faculties as a saxophone quartet was carried out on the initiative of Friedrich Wodarczack (tenor saxophone), staff members Sabine Scholz (soprano saxophone) and Reiner Schulz (baritone saxophone), as well as Ulrike Schulze from BSZ-Zittau (alto saxophone).

Since everyone had musical training, extensive rehearsals were not necessary to put together the entertaining program. The first performance on December 9 took place in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, where a sizeable audience (staff and students) gathered in the stairwell and hallway areas of the first floor. The approximately 15-minute performance was met with enthusiastic applause. After successfully passing this test, the quartet performed three times in a row on December 13 at various locations across campus. Around noon, the quartet played in the student canteen lobby, followed immediately by a performance in the lobby of the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering. The day’s performances concluded with a serenade at the Zittau Vocational School Center. Everywhere, the Christmas music was received with great joy.

On December 15, the final performance took place in Building I, as the University Executive Board was also to enjoy the Christmas music. Unfortunately, Rector Prof. Albrecht was unable to attend that day as he was in Görlitz, but Prorector Prof. Zschunke and other staff members from the University Executive Board, as well as several listeners from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, were present and offered enthusiastic applause. The quartet would have loved to play at the other faculties and institutes of the HSZG as well, but unfortunately, scheduling conflicts made this impossible. The musicians will ask Santa Claus to keep this in mind for next year and wish everyone a merry Christmas!
