Above all, Karin Hollstein's outstanding commitment to the Board of Directors of Studentenwerk Dresden was honored.
Monika Niehues, Chancellor of the Dresden University of Applied Sciences (HTW), and Karin Hollstein, Chancellor of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, were honored with the Medal of Merit of the German Student Union, the umbrella organization of the 57 German student unions, during the ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Studentenwerk Dresden on 4 December.
Both chancellors have served on this committee for more than ten years. They supported the Studentenwerk Dresden in a wide range of issues and in cooperation with the universities, local authorities and the Saxon Real Estate and Construction Management. In this way, pragmatic solutions could be found, e.g. for the use of a joint chip card, for investments in the canteen area and for the use of resources. Further projects between Studentenwerk Dresden and the two universities were decisively advanced through the mediation of the chancellors.
"Ms. Karin Hollstein, Chancellor of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, has been a member of the Studentenwerk Dresden Administrative Board without interruption since 2006. She works there with great commitment and supports Studentenwerk Dresden in a wide range of issues and in cooperation at its external location in Zittau/Görlitz. In this way, many very good and pragmatic solutions have been found, e.g. for the use of a joint chip card, for investments in the canteen area and for the joint use of resources. Her support during the flood disaster at the site in 2010 is also particularly noteworthy in this context. Since 2008, Ms. Hollstein has also been a member of the permanent Administrative Board Commission "Regulations", which prepares the content and wording of all key basic documents of Studentenwerk Dresden. These include the basic regulations, the rules of procedure of the Administrative Board, the various user regulations, the tax statutes of the non-profit commercial enterprises and the election regulations for the Administrative Board representatives. In these areas, she has distinguished herself through her legal expertise and meticulous drafting work, which has been gratefully received by all as very valuable support. She was also involved in the "University Gastronomy" Administrative Board commission, which was formed in 2014 in the wake of the difficult economic situation and was tasked with finding ways of optimally fulfilling the social mission in view of the very poor financial situation at the time. In this commission, intensive discussions and very detailed work were carried out on the transparency of economic management, controlling and the possibilities of influencing costs in the catering facilities and possible measures for management improvements. With all this commitment, it must also be taken into account that Ms. Hollstein is based in Zittau, which means a 2-hour journey to and from Dresden for each appointment and therefore a considerable amount of time. In view of her many years of extra-mandatory commitment and her services to the Studentenwerk Dresden, it was high time that Karin Hollstein's work was appropriately recognized. This is to be done today by awarding her the DSW Medal of Merit." Laudatory speech by Prof. Rudolf Pörtner, former Managing Director of Studentenwerk Dresden
