Jazz classics and a Christmas feast

The Adhoc college band set the festive mood for Christmas with their music in the foyer of the Zittau student canteen.

I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like this before! On Thursday, true to their band name, the university’s Adhoc Trio performed in the student canteen foyer. They kicked things off at 11:30 a.m. so they could welcome the early guests with music right away. The three musicians played for about an hour, performing Christmas tunes with a jazzy twist, interspersed with well-known jazz standards from the American Songbook to liven up the set. The three musicians—Arne Maiwald, Chris Fischer, and Friedrich Wodarczack—clearly enjoyed themselves, and the surprised and delighted expressions on many visitors’ faces showed just how much they enjoyed the performance. After an hour, the three musicians were also in need of a bite to eat, and after enjoying venison goulash with green beans, they launched into the second set, which—with their enthusiasm for playing showing no signs of waning—didn’t come to an end until around 2:00 p.m. Not only were there many happy faces, but also direct praise—including from our Chancellor, Ms. Hollstein—which served as a welcome thank-you for the three members of Adhoc, though many a guest wished to experience such musical variety more regularly during the hours at the student canteen. A big thank you to the three musicians, along with good wishes for the holiday season and a Happy New Year—in which we hope to see more performances by the Adhoc College Band.
