HSZGdict - English-German dictionary now online
Whether 'term paper' or 'diploma'. The new online tool helps you choose the right English term.
When should I use “term paper” and when should I use “written report”? Is it “University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz” or “Zittau/Goerlitz University of Applied Sciences”? What is the correct abbreviation for “Bachelor of Arts”? Is a “Diplom” really a “diploma”?
If you, too, deal with these and similar questions in your day-to-day work, you’ll find the answers you need in the new online tool HSZGdict. HSZGdict is designed to serve as a guide for its users in the consistent translation of HSZG-specific terms as well as general terms used in the higher education context into English. Michaela Heidig, a certified translator who was working on the “Blended Learning” project at the University at the time, began—outside her actual area of responsibility — to compile a list of higher education-specific terms for a future German-English higher education dictionary. The data she compiled was handed over last year to Oliver Rymon, a translator in the Student Services & International Affairs division.
In addition to further specialized vocabulary, he added a glossary function, so that explanations are now available for many of the entries in both languages. In collaboration with Daniel Schmidt from the Public Relations Office, the data collection has now been transferred to the online search tool HSZGdict.
HSZGdict is continuously updated. Should one of your searches in the database ever prove unsuccessful, we would appreciate information about it. Using the suggestion feature, you can send us information and recommend the relevant term for inclusion or translation.
We would also like to take this opportunity to once again extend our heartfelt thanks to Michaela Heidig for her dedication and for sharing her data collection!
