To mark the completion of construction work on Building ZV (High-Voltage Engineering and University Data Centre) and the appointment of Dr.techn. Stefan Kornhuber, the colloquium of the High-Voltage Engineering/Materials in Electrical Engineering department at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science took place on May 4, 2015. Over 40 national and international experts in high-voltage engineering accepted the department’s invitation to Zittau.
During the opening remarks, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kornhuber thanked the university administration and the Saxon State Real Estate and Construction Management Agency for their good cooperation and for carrying out the construction work, as well as the industry for its past collaboration and for the trust already placed in the department for the future. Dean Prof. Dr.-Ing. Haim conveyed the rector’s best wishes and, in his opening address, highlighted the successful appointment process to succeed Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bärsch, expressing gratitude to all those involved and to the university administration. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bärsch thanked the industry for its long-standing cooperation and for the swift completion of the appointment process. Four interesting presentations on current topics (e.g., the energy transition and HVDC corridors) provided a broad overview and sparked many discussions. The following presentations were delivered at this colloquium and opened for discussion.
In his presentation “EDT Diagnosis of Power Cables,” Prof. Dr. sc.techn. Dr. h.c. Lemke outlined the significance as well as the limitations of EDT diagnosis of power cables and reflected on the results of theoretical considerations in light of his practical experience. Dr. Pihera, University of West Bohemia – Pilsen, presented the capabilities of the newly founded Regional Innovation Center for Electrical Engineering (RICE), which, in addition to high-performance test facilities for storage technologies and drive applications, also focuses on research in electronics (e.g., “Wearable Electronics”). In the second part of the presentation, Dr. habil. Schmuck, Pfisterer Sefag AG – Malters, Switzerland, presented a paper as an insulator manufacturer for the new transmission lines in Europe, offering an outlook on compact high-voltage overhead lines with real-world examples. In the concluding presentation by Dr. Lambrecht of Wacker Chemie AG – Burghausen, novel applications and production possibilities in the field of silicones—such as highly filled silicone gels and UV-activated cross-linking—were introduced.
During tours of the laboratories, guests were able to see for themselves the capabilities of the High-Voltage Technology/Materials department within the School of Electrical Engineering and explore questions raised during the presentations in greater depth. The event concluded with a pleasant evening in the high voltage facility.
