From now on: Officially a university town!
Minister President Michael Kretschmer yesterday handed over the notification from the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior, according to which Görlitz and Zittau can now officially call themselves a "university town".
What a wonderful day for our Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.
Yesterday at the Görlitz campus, in the presence of Prof. Dr. Alexander Kratzsch, president of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Stephan Meyer, district administrator of the Görlitz district, Octavian Ursu, Mayor of Görlitz, and Thomas Zenker, Mayor of Zittau, delivered a notice from the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior. According to this decision, the cities of Görlitz and Zittau may now officially call themselves “university cities” and display this designation on their town entrance signs.
Kretschmer emphasized that the university is an important factor in the region’s continued development and expressed his hope that it would “continue to grow and build on the successes of recent years.”
I am very proud that, after a long effort, we have finally succeeded in having Görlitz and Zittau display the title “University City” on their town signs. This success is a wonderful example of how the good cooperation between Mayor Octavian Ursu, Mayor Thomas Zenker, our university, and the support of the state government creates added value for our region. ”Following identical city council resolutions in March, the cities of Görlitz and Zittau submitted an application to the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior, in accordance with the legal provisions of the Saxon Municipal Code, to be granted the title “University City,” which is to be displayed on the town entrance signs in the future. A prerequisite for the conferral of this title is that it must represent a special circumstance related to the municipality’s historical past, its unique character, or its current significance.
Görlitz and Zittau have applied for the title of “University City” via city council resolutions, since both cities have not only been home to the Zittau/Zittau university.Görlitz University, with approximately 500 employees and over 2,600 students, but also because the region has developed into a thriving center for science and research in recent years. Renowned scientific institutes, such as Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, Leibniz, Senckenberg, DLR, and CASUS, are represented in Görlitz, Zittau, and the surrounding area. Most recently, the city of Görlitz has garnered significant national attention due to the German Center for Astrophysics (DZA), which is currently under construction.
