In June 2018, the 13th Regional Conference on Engineering Education, organized by the Society for Engineering Education, took place at Bochum University of Applied Sciences.
The main theme was “Diversity and Cultural Diversity—Differentiate, Individualize, or Integrate?” This topic was explored through current research and teaching presentations, reports, and illustrative practical examples. Staff members from Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences presented two papers in the form of lectures.
The first was the presentation: “thermoSOL”—An Integrated Workshop Approach to Support Self-Organized Learning Processes in the Technical Thermodynamics Module by Ronny Freudenreich and Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Hans-Joachim Kretzschmar. The presentation introduced the “thermoSOL” didactic concept, which was integrated into the Technical Thermodynamics module and further developed and evaluated as part of the e-teaching certificate program at TU Dresden. In the second part, initial evaluation results from the pilot study were presented, and an outlook was provided on the sustainable implementation of the lessons learned.
The second presentation was titled: “I’m Packing My Toolkit and Taking Along…”—Subject-Specific Knowledge and Social-Communicative Competence for Industrial Engineers by Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Sophia Keil and Daniel Winkler. This presentation introduced the initial results of a new teaching/learning concept in the class / course “Manufacturing Management.” In particular, the presentation addressed the application of the flipped classroom method, collaboration among interdisciplinary instructors, the curriculum-time dilemma, and exemplary teaching, and also provided practical tips.
You can read the full abstracts of both presentations here.
In summary, the Regional Conference on Engineering Education once again offered not only a wealth of academic presentations but also many opportunities to discuss topics such as technical education and engineering education, as well as to further expand personal professional networks.
