Girls' Day at the HSZG

Watch as a circuit diagram quickly turns into a finished circuit board, assemble it yourself, and then it’s showtime! From anise to devil's claw to cinnamon: the Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Laboratory at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences offers interested high school students a glimpse into the vast world of natural medicinal substances.

Purification of solids in organic synthesis. The students will purify benzoic acid through recrystallization and verify the results by determining its melting point. Sturdy shoes and long pants are required. Lab coats and safety goggles will be provided.

At the Natural Fiber Center at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, researchers are working diligently to find ways for us to live and produce using what nature provides, while protecting our environment. Plants play a central role in our work. We can use them to generate energy—such as biogas—or to manufacture great products, like biodegradable disposable tableware or train components. Our researchers at the Natural Fiber Center will explain how it all works.
Along the way, you’ll learn what fungi eat and how we can use their unique abilities in the future to help with recycling and making otherwise unusable materials useful. We’ll also show you what modern machines can achieve when sorting plastics to reduce petroleum use and CO2 emissions in the future.
