Gerontology specialist days at the HSZG

The Faculty of Social Sciences at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences is hosting a gerontology conference in June 2017 on the topic of “Age-Appropriate Assistance Systems.”

Demographic change, shifts in family structures, and workplace dynamics raise urgent questions about the future of in-home care for older adults in need of care. This is because the desire to lead a self-determined life well into old age remains very strong. During this phase of life, the home becomes the center of one’s life, and living conditions are a key determinant of older adults’ quality of life. Age-appropriate home modifications are therefore becoming increasingly important (keyword: accessibility). In addition, assistive technology systems make it possible to live longer in one’s familiar home environment and social circle, which has a positive impact on quality of life. Experts discuss these technologies in the context of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL).

Since 2014, an interdisciplinary project team at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences has been conducting research on the topic “Trust in Assistive Technologies for the Inclusion of Older Adults” (VATI), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Among other things, the project is investigating the potential applications of such technologies in the Görlitz district.

At the Gerontology Symposium, speakers from the project with experience in both research and practice will present current developments in this field. The presentations cover the broad spectrum of the topic and provide insight into this extremely exciting field of research.

The invitation is extended to all interested parties, including older adults, family members, students, graduates, staff members, and anyone working in senior services, caregiving, healthcare, or housing.
