As part of the Saxony-wide project “Aktionstag genialsozial 2015” on July 7 (www.genialsozial.de), Sebastian Swoboda, a 9th-grade student at Christian Weise Gymnasium, worked at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. On this action day, students swap their school desks for a paid job for one day to perform support tasks. The wages earned on this day are donated to humanitarian projects.
Together with the head of the Thermohydraulics Laboratory at the Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM), Dipl.-Ing. Sören Alt, Mr. Swoboda conducted experiments at the “Zittau Flow Channel” large-scale test facility. The objective was to experimentally determine data on the characteristics of a newly installed cooler. To this end, Mr. Swoboda varied the primary-side flow rates through the cooler throughout the morning, kept the test log, and operated the test facility’s measurement, control, and regulation system. In the afternoon, he evaluated the data, resulting in a characteristic curve depicting the heat transfer behavior of the cooler.
The experiments conducted and the data analysis serve as the basis for upcoming semi-technical-scale experiments in the BMWi-funded research project “Local Effects in the PWR Core Resulting from Zinc Borate Deposits Following KMV” under the project leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Kästner.
During his day at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Mr. Swoboda gained insight into current research projects and, above all, access to existing test facilities and state-of-the-art automation technology. We thank Mr. Swoboda for his support and dedication and wish him continued success as he prepares for his high school graduation exams.
The “Zittau Flow Channel” (ZSW) test facility, measuring 6 m in length and 3 m in height, is the largest test stand in the IPM’s thermohydraulics laboratory.
