Visiting scientists from South Africa at the HSZG

Jan-Hendrik Smith and Karl Jacobie, visiting scholars from North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa, were guests at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG). Thanks to a collaboration between their university and HSZG as part of the ERASMUS program, they visited the Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM) from February through March.

The goal of the two visiting researchers was to implement a process monitoring method on the THERESA test facility. Before their arrival, they had already been working on a methodology and an experimental design, which they put into practice during their brief stay at HSZG. Jan-Hendrik, who is working on his Ph.D., spent three months in Zittau and was able to test his research methods using data from the THERESA thermal energy storage test facility. Karl Jacobie from Namibia spent one month in Zittau and was able to collect valuable data for his research.

Torsten Klette and Thomas Schäfer provided academic supervision for the two visiting researchers at the IPM. The South Africans were very satisfied with their collaboration at the HSZG and praised the state-of-the-art research facilities and conditions, which are not available in their home countries. Although the data processing for their project is still pending, they were able to collect extensive data to test and validate their process monitoring technology.

Despite their short stay, they still had time to explore the region around Zittau. They found Zittau to be a beautiful place with many sights and attractions. Together, they visited some of the region’s attractions, such as the Nonnenfelsen in Jonsdorf, Dresden, and Czech breweries and cities. Both are determined to return to get to know the tri-border region even better.

Jan-Hendrik and Karl hope to complete their doctoral and master’s degrees, respectively, in South Africa, and look forward to joint publications resulting from their collaboration with HSZG. We are proud to have hosted such talented and dedicated individuals and wish them all the good luck for their future!

Valuable Research Results Achieved by South African Visiting Scientists at HSZG!

Jan-Hendrik Smith and Karl Jacobie from North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa, visited HSZG’s Institute of Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM) in Zittau from February through March. Their goal was to advance their research under favorable conditions at HSZG as part of a collaboration between the two universities supported by the ERASMUS program.

During their stay, they worked on implementing a pre-determined process monitoring method to be applied to the THERESA test facility, which resulted in extensive data collection to test and validate their process monitoring technique. Jan-Hendrik, who is working on his PhD, spent three months in Zittau and was very satisfied with the collaboration at HSZG, the state-of-the-art research facilities, and the helpful staff. Karl, who is from Windhoek, Namibia, spent one month in Zittau and was able to collect valuable data for his research. Torsten Klette and Thomas Schäfer provided technical supervision for the two visiting researchers at IPM.

Despite their relatively short stay, they also had the chance to explore the region around Zittau, visiting sights such as the Nonnenfelsen in Jonsdorf and several Czech breweries and cities. Both visiting researchers praised the region’s beauty and expressed their desire to return to get to know the tri-state region even better.
