Formal Enrolment Ceremony

During the enrolment ceremony on September 28, 2016, the new students were warmly welcomed to Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. This year, the event took place at the Landskron KULTurBRAUEREI in Görlitz. In response to the Rector’s invitation, numerous guests attended, including figures from politics and business, representatives of public institutions and companies, representatives of foreign and domestic partner universities, high schools, and vocational training centers, as well as alumni and members of the Friends of the University Association.

This year, approximately 900 new undergraduate students were welcomed, including 190 international students from 26 countries. In addition, 70 international students began their language preparation at the University’s 'Studienkolleg' (preparatory college) in order to pursue studies in Germany. They come from countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Sri Lanka, India, China, Morocco, and Tunisia.

At the start of the academic year, approximately 3,100 students will be enrolled at the University.
The Rector, Prof. Dr. Friedrich Albrecht, extended a warm welcome to the students and guests. In his remarks, he briefly discussed Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and its role in the Europeanization and globalization of the academic landscape, as well as its mission to serve as a regional driving force in knowledge and technology transfer.
The Head of the Council Archives / City Archives, Mr. Siegfried Hoche, was invited to deliver the keynote address. He gave a masterful presentation on the history of Upper Lusatia and, in particular, the residents of the city of Görlitz.

Dr. Petra Zimmermann, Director of the Office for Youth, Schools, Sports, and Social Affairs, addressed the new students on behalf of the Mayor of Görlitz, as did Mr. Christian Bäetz, a representative of the University’s student body, who also addressed the guests. They, too, wished the newly enrolled students every success in their studies.

Following this, the Rector and Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kühne, Head (of divison) of Academic Administration and Director of the International Office, presented Ms. Réka Schmieder (Hungary) with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Award in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements in the Master's degree programme in culture and management.
Ronald Schmidt, First Vice Chair of the Friends of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences e. V., together with Dr. Kühne, presented Ms. Lenka Volfová (Czech Republic), a student in the Master's degree programme in integrated management systems, with the “Award for Exceptional Academic and Social Commitment.”
