Excellent doctoral candidate from Zittau
Marcus Rohne is doing his doctorate as part of the LaNDER³ project. He defended his dissertation with "Magna cum laude".
Marcus Rohne, who has been working as a research assistant at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) since 2017, has successfully completed his doctoral dissertation as part of the LaNDER³ project. Under the supervision of HSZG Professor Jens Meinert—who assumed the position of Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on September 1, 2024—Rohne defended his PhD thesis titled “Contributions to the Design of Contour-Following Temperature Control Channels in Molds for Variothermic Process Control” at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg.

Rohne, who received his Diplom in Mechanical Engineering from Dresden University of Technology in 2014, focused his doctoral dissertation on the optimization of tools for thermal forming (e.g., injection molding of plastics). Specifically, he developed computational approaches that enable both efficient heat utilization and uniform temperature distribution. These computational methods are designed so that they can also be applied in practice by toolmakers.
Rohne began his scientific career at Fraunhofer IFAM in Dresden, where, after completing his Diplom thesis on thermoelectrics, he initially worked in a research group that Professor Meinert was leading on a part-time basis at the time. In 2017, he moved to HSZG and worked on various subprojects within the LaNDER³ project, once again under the direction of Professor Meinert. His focus was on the energy efficiency of thermal processes in the manufacture of natural-fiber-reinforced plastic components—an area of great importance for the “thermal transition,” as German industry currently obtains only 6 percent of its process heat from renewable sources.
The dissertation defense took place on May 17, 2024, at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg. The committee had already agreed in advance that the written thesis would be graded “Very Good.” Following a 30-minute presentation and a 90-minute question-and-answer session, the committee unanimously decided to award the PhD thesis the distinction “Magna cum laude.”
Upon successfully completing his degree, Marcus Rohne left the HSZG on May 31, 2024, and resumed his position as a research associate in his former research group at Fraunhofer IFAM Dresden, which he will head starting October 1, 2024.
His doctoral advisor, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Fieback of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg, commented on the achievement, saying, “We’d love to see more such excellent doctoral candidates from Zittau!” The Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences warmly congratulates Marcus Rohne on this outstanding achievement and wishes him all the good luck for his future career.
