For the first time, the cities of Zittau and Görlitz, the Dresden Student Services Organization, and Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences are jointly publishing a welcome brochure for first-year students.
Why should you study at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences? For prospective students, it’s important to have a suitable range of degree programs combined with high-quality teaching, modern infrastructure, and good student support. But of course, a young person embarking on a new chapter in life as they begin their studies is particularly interested in what life is like in their college town. Often, this also becomes their new hometown, as only 16% of applications for a spot at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) now come from Eastern Saxony.
This is where the new welcome brochure for prospective students comes in. What makes this project special is that it was developed in collaboration with the Zittau City Administration, Europastadt GörlitzZgorzelec GmbH (which is responsible for Görlitz’s location marketing), the Dresden Student Services Organization, and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. The joint project was implemented by Redaktions- und Verlagsgesellschaft Neiße mbH. The brochure is intended to be sent to every prospective student along with their admission documents to help them decide to pursue their studies in our attractive university region.
What’s it like to live in Zittau and Görlitz? What kind of cost of living can I expect? What are the leisure options like? These are just a few of the questions answered by the brochure, which is filled with insider tips from students and atmospheric photos. For example, Marie recommends her favorite pastry shop in Zittau to anyone with a sweet tooth. Sitting on the roof, Lara raves about student life in Görlitz’s shared apartments.
“Putting together the brochure was fun because we worked closely with our students and gained many insights into real student life. Above all, we realized one thing: anyone who has chosen to study in Zittau and Görlitz is happy about it and would recommend it to others,” summarizes Antje Pfitzner, head of the Public Relations Office at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.
In addition to authentic information, the brochure offers a special bonus: the middle section features discount coupons from regional businesses. HSZG students can cut out the coupons and redeem them by presenting their student ID. The initiative for this joint project came from Kai Grebasch.
“I’m very pleased that we were able to get not only the Student Services Organization but also our colleagues from Görlitz excited about the project. As a result, both campuses of our university are now conveniently featured in a single booklet,” says the press spokesperson for the city of Zittau.
One university, two cities—the brochure’s dual-sided design underscores that students at HSZG get more. Depending on which side of the brochure you open, you’ll be welcomed either in Görlitz or in Zittau. The content section highlights what has long been part of everyday life for students: they enjoy the benefits of living in the “Three-Country Corner”!

For the welcome brochure, photos were taken with students from Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences in the cityscapes of Görlitz and Zittau, at Lake Olbersdorf, and at the university’s climbing camp in Jonsdorf. Photographer Gabriel Moreno is himself a graduate of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and was delighted to return to his old haunts for this project.
