Dimensions of nursing care as a science
In this lecture series, the HSZG highlights current topics and research findings on care.
As part of the lecture series "The dimensions of care as science", scientists from the HSZG present current topics and research findings on care and care-related fields for all interested parties. Selected lectures will be supplemented by representatives from the administration, such as the Görlitz District Office, or from nursing practice. Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity for an exchange and discussion.
The lecture series will be continued in the winter semester 2023/24.

From the perspective of educational science and history, this paper examines the academization of the nursing profession and explores its specific contribution to good care. It highlights, by way of example, the developments and needs regarding qualified nursing professionals as well as training opportunities in the Görlitz district.

It is usually difficult for relatives to recognize that their loved ones are developing a form of dementia. This article looks at the latest scientific findings in care science on this topic and gives relatives practical tips on how to support and deal with those affected. Regional contact points and offers of help are also presented.

A comprehensive reform of guardianship law took effect on January 1, 2023. In light of an increasingly aging society and the resulting rise in costs for guardianship proceedings, a right of emergency representation between spouses in the area of health care—which had been under discussion for many years—was also introduced. The presentation explains the details of the new regulations and also addresses the practical difficulties in their implementation. It will also discuss whether it still makes sense at all to draw up a living will or a durable power of attorney.

Given the shortage of skilled workers in many professions, including nursing, German society cannot do without family members providing care, and the German economy cannot do without their professional occupation. Therefore, successfully balancing caregiving and their professional occupation is essential. This lecture will present the current state of balancing caregiving and work, as well as relevant legal regulations. With the 2015 Family Care Leave Act, the Independent Advisory Board on the Compatibility of Caregiving and Work was established to provide critical oversight of the federal government’s efforts in this area. The speaker is the vice-chair of this committee and will present the advisory board’s work since 2015. In conclusion, he will offer a critical summary and make recommendations for the further development of this field.
