For optimum care
The Chair in Social Gerontology and the GAT Institute are forming a partnership with a European umbrella organization for the care sector. The director of the HSZG Institute has been elected Vice Chair of Research.
In Germany, as is the case on average across Europe, 80 to 90 percent of people in need of care are cared for at home, with the vast majority of them receiving care exclusively from family caregivers. The European care network Eurocarers sees itself as an advocate for family caregivers—that is, family members, friends, or neighbors who care for their loved ones.
From its headquarters in Brussels, Eurocarers coordinates a network comprising 76 care organizations and research institutions in 26 European countries and advises the European Commission, the European Parliament, and political advocacy groups in the 27 EU member states, most recently in the development of the European Care Strategy.
Prof. Dr. Hoff Elected Vice Chair of Research
After Prof. Dr. Andreas Hoff, Professor of Social Gerontology and Director of the research institute “Health, Ageing, Technology” (GAT), became a member of the Eurocarers Board of Directors in 2022, he was appointed Vice Chair of Research for the European care network on February 4, 2025. Students of Social Gerontology also benefit from the insights gained through this work, particularly in seminars on social policy for older adults in Europe.
The part-time Master’s program in Social Gerontology at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences focuses on the discussion of specific issues and recent research findings regarding optimal care for older adults and their families. The program begins each year in the summer semester. Classes start in March. More information is available on the website.
