In a conversation with MDR editor Clemens Haug on June 1, 2024, Raj Kollmorgen, Prorector for Research and professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences, discussed why the AfD has seen particularly strong growth in eastern Germany.
In his view, the success of populist parties in eastern Germany is based, on the one hand, on the cultural influences of the GDR and, on the other hand, on the disappointments following German reunification.

The Future of Democracy in (Eastern) Germany
In addition to the interview with MDR, Prof. Raj Kollmorgen’s expertise was also sought at the 9th Annual Conference of the Saxony Center for Democracy. At the invitation of the Minister of State for Social Affairs and Social Cohesion, Petra Köpping, more than 200 experts from all over Saxony gathered in Dresden on May 30, 2024, to participate in the event and exchange views on the topics of the future of democracy in (East) Germany and the rise to power of authoritarian-populist and far-right actors.
During a panel discussion, Minister of State Petra Köpping discussed these issues with Lisa Paus (Federal Minister for Family, Senior Citizens, Women, and Youth), Carsten Schneider (Minister of State and Federal Government Officer for Eastern Germany), Prof. Dr. Raj Kollmorgen (Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences), and Andrea Hübler (Executive Director of RAA Sachsen e.V.) on the future of democracy in eastern Germany.
