"Are you already thinking, or are you still shopping?"

A student street theater

A cooperation between students of social work at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and Tierra - Eine Welt e.V. at the 25th International Görlitz Street Theater Festival "ViaThea"

The sewing machines clatter tirelessly. Seamstresses produce one item of clothing after another in piecework. As soon as one is finished, buyers frantically snatch it out of their hands. The vicious circle of buying frenzy and production is accelerating ... Who is actually responsible for this madness?

A year-long project between the Görlitz association Tierra - Eine Welt e.V., social work students at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences and actress Bogna von Woedke resulted in a street theater about human and labor rights in global textile production. The play was successfully performed several times as part of the 25th International Görlitz Street Theater Festival "ViaThea". If you look at today's phenomenon of "fast fashion", it becomes clear how the industry has switched to fast and cheap production in countries such as China, India and Ethiopia to satisfy our need for cheap clothing. We want to see something new in the stores every month to have the choice and follow new trends. But our consumption leads to conditions that we should be aware of the consequences of, and yet too easily turn away from: Workers sewing clothes for two dollars a day, ignoring their human rights to feed their families, cotton farmers crumbling under the pressure to grow and provide sufficient quantities of the important raw material. And the use of harmful pesticides and chemicals to protect the vulnerable plants, which endanger our environment and health. Clothing has long since degenerated into a consumer good and the origin and conditions under which it is produced are not important to many as long as they can buy a T-shirt for three euros.

Since 2017, the traveling exhibition "TUCHFÜHLUNG - VOM REINWASCHEN UND SCHÖNFÄRBEN" has been created as part of the closet project in the Social Work degree program at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. (see video), school project days for lower secondary school pupils and an action art project in public spaces. The current project group is going on tour with a pop-up stand in Görlitz on the occasion of the Saxon Development Education Days in November 2019 on the topic of "doing business worldwide". The stand will showcase ways of dealing with (used) textiles responsibly and sustainably. In addition, the students supported the UmFAIRteilung initiative group with the reopening of their free store.
