Record and watch - videos at the heart of teaching

Web conference on the topic of instructional video creation on 23.04.2020 at 15:00.

Moving instruction to a virtual environment gives instructors the opportunity to offer self-created videos—combined with other elements, such as online exercises and self-assessments—as asynchronous online instruction. This makes it possible to create teaching and learning opportunities that give students easy access to course content that would otherwise pose a particular challenge due to on-site technical infrastructure or other problematic conditions.

On April 23, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. , a “Shortcut” session on creating instructional videos will be offered as part of a web conference; all interested instructors are invited to attend. Participants will receive an introduction to various scenarios and the pedagogical possibilities of using video and audio content in teaching. Tools for video production on a home computer will be introduced, and practical examples of successful teaching will be presented. Login details will be sent to faculty members via email.

Videos can be integrated into a wide variety of instructional scenarios. There are now excellent examples across all faculties at HSZG where videos are used to replace or supplement in-person classes. Hardly any other multimedia format is as easy to produce and publish as the educational video. The range extends from screencasts, slide-based/PowerPoint videos, sketch videos, and virtual scenarios (2D and 3D) to live-action videos.

To make it easier to get started with video-based teaching and to provide an overview of tools and methods, the staff involved have developed a comprehensive portfolio of tools, advisory services, and guides, which is available on the website of the Centre for eLearning (Zfe). These resources are continuously reviewed for their suitability for teaching and compliance with data protection regulations and can therefore be considered an alternative to in-person instruction.
