1st International "Internship Speed Dating"

Europastadt GmbH and Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences hosted their first internship speed-dating event.

In collaboration with Europastadt Görlitz Zgorzelec GmbH (EGZ), the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG), together with Görlitz-based IT companies participating in the “IT Roundtable” initiative, held the first international internship speed-dating event on March 19, 2015. The goal of the event was to make it easier for graduates of the international preparatory college to begin a degree program in Görlitz by offering them options such as internships alongside their studies or positions as working students at an IT company in Görlitz. Graduates of the international preparatory college have the opportunity to pursue a degree in Germany upon obtaining their degree. The internship speed-dating event provided these potential students with an early glimpse of career prospects in Görlitz, with the aim of attracting them to the city for the long term.

The idea originated during a meeting of the “IT Roundtable,” which Europastadt GmbH regularly organizes as part of its IT business support program in collaboration with the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences. “We want to support young people coming to Germany in their plans to pursue a degree at the university. Computer science is a key skill that offers graduates great opportunities in the job market,” says Prof. Dr. Jörg Lässig, associate dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at HSZG, commenting on the internship speed-dating event. A thriving IT faculty in Görlitz is also important for economic development: “The IT sector has developed exceptionally well in Görlitz in recent years. We would like to continue actively promoting this trend, for example, through initiatives such as the internship speed-dating event to attract young IT talent to Görlitz-based companies,” explains Thomas Klatte, Managing Director of EGZ.

Background:

The graduates of the HSZG’s international preparatory program come from Indonesia, Poland, Morocco, Russia, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bolivia, China, Jordan, Cameroon, Romania, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, and Vietnam. By successfully obtaining their degree, the graduates of the preparatory college have cleared the first hurdle and, through hard work and dedication, acquired German language skills that provide an excellent foundation for successful studies at a Saxon university.
