How can I integrate students' portfolios into teaching and examinations?

In higher education, a portfolio is understood to be a "folder" of "collected sheets" (lat. portare and folium) containing various materials (results, documentation, reflections, etc.). Students can use a portfolio to document and reflect on their learning processes, learning outcomes and developed products; a portfolio can also be used for examinations. The function of a portfolio must be precisely defined in the module description or course description and related to the intended learning outcomes/competences (ILOs) in order to provide students with guidance for their work.

What

In the workshop, participants work on the following questions:

  • What competencies should students demonstrate and reflect on in their portfolio?
  • What do these intended competencies mean for the type of portfolio? (tasks, forms of presentation, structure, etc.)?
  • How can teachers introduce and support work with portfolios? (incl. working with self-reflection)
  • What forms of feedback can be integrated (e.g. peer feedback, learning partnerships)?
  • What can assessment criteria look like and possibly be specified together with the students?
  • How can the work involved in supervising and assessing portfolios be reduced? (e.g. through peer review and peer assessment)
