Lecture evening on the topic "Umgebindehäuser - Sustainable in construction and use?"

Every year, on the Wednesday before Open House Day for Umgebinde Houses, the Information Center for Umgebinde Houses (IZU) hosts a lecture evening. The IZU, part of the Faculty of Business Administration and Engineering Management at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, serves as the academic point of contact for topics related to the Umgebindehaus and is committed to preserving this regionally significant architectural style.

This year’s lecture evening will take place on May 22, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in Room 5 of Building ZII at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Schliebenstraße 21 in Zittau.

The term “sustainability” is old but highly relevant today. That is why four lectures by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Bolsius, Dipl.-Ing. André Hennig, Dr.-Ing. Liane Vogel, as well as Dipl.-Ing. Stefanie Kipke and Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Kipke, will explore the question of whether half-timbered houses are truly as sustainable as they are said to be. Following a virtual tour of a half-timbered building that has been renovated in accordance with historic preservation standards, the renovation measures undertaken and their impact on the building’s energy consumption will be explained. Subsequently, the building and the renovation measures will be evaluated based on current sustainability criteria.

Considerations regarding sustainability must always extend to the use of the buildings as well, as illustrated by a representative half-timbered house.
