Service-learning is a type of seminar that combines subject-specific learning with project-based activities in nonprofit settings. In this context, students carry out time-limited social, environmental, or cultural projects in nonprofit settings that are aligned with the relevant theoretical content. This allows theoretical knowledge to be applied in practice and reflected upon at the same time. In addition to subject-specific learning, service-learning can also strengthen a wide range of other skills, such as social and personal skills.
In this two-day workshop, the concept of service learning—along with practical examples and research findings on its effects—will first be introduced in a keynote presentation. Participants will then reflect on how service learning might fit into their individual teaching curricula. The workshop will then examine potential obstacles and challenges in implementation, while also introducing various didactic tools (e.g., structuring the project process) that can support the supervision, guidance, and reflection involved in community service-learning projects.
The workshop also focuses on providing individual support and guidance to instructors who are planning a specific service-learning seminar for the winter semester 2025/2026. Participants will work in small groups and engage in interactive discussions. The second day of the workshop is dedicated to comprehensive preparation for implementation and the presentation of their own concepts. The intensive exchange among participants and feedback on the concepts will aid in the development of the course.

- to integrate the fundamentals of the service-learning concept into their own teaching in a well-reasoned and substantiated manner,
- to support student project-based learning using pedagogical tools, and
- to provide peer feedback on various service-learning concepts.

Ulrike Rada is a consultant for higher education pedagogy at Chemnitz University of Technology. In her work, she supports instructors, teaching teams, and committees in the (further) development of teaching competencies, curricula, and conditions conducive to learning for good teaching. She has many years of consulting experience with faculty members from various departments and cultural backgrounds. Her extensive experience advising and working with students, as well as her studies in adult education, help her better understand learning processes so she can effectively shape them.
