Service-learning is a type of course in which academic content is combined with project-based activities in community-service contexts. In this process, students carry out time-limited social, environmental, or cultural projects in community-service settings that align with the relevant theoretical content. This allows theoretical knowledge to be applied in practice while also being reflected upon. In addition to subject-specific learning, service-learning can also strengthen a variety of other skills, such as social and personal competencies.
In this two-day workshop, the concept of service learning—along with practical examples and research findings on its effects—will first be introduced in a keynote presentation. Participants will then reflect on how service learning might fit into their individual teaching curricula. The workshop will then examine potential obstacles and challenges in implementation, while also introducing various pedagogical tools (e.g., structuring the project process) that can support the supervision, guidance, and reflection involved in community service-learning projects.
The workshop also focuses on providing individual support and guidance to instructors who are planning a specific service-learning seminar for the winter semester of 2025/2026. Participants will work in small groups and engage in interactive discussions. The second day of the workshop is dedicated to comprehensive preparation for implementation and the presentation of their own concepts. The intensive exchange among participants and feedback on the concepts will help in the development of the course.

- to support student project-based learning using pedagogical tools, and
- to provide peer feedback on various service-learning concepts.

Ulrike Rada is a lecturer in higher education pedagogy at Chemnitz University of Technology. In her work, she supports faculty members, teaching teams, and committees in the (further) development of teaching competencies, curricula, and conditions conducive to learning for good teaching. She has many years of consulting experience with faculty members from various departments and cultural backgrounds. Her extensive experience in advising and working with students, as well as her studies in adult education, help her better understand learning processes so she can design effective learning experiences.
