Living independently in old age thanks to modern technology

From smoke detectors to fall detection: From August 20–22 in Ebersbach-Neugersdorf, technologies designed to support independent and safe living for seniors will be showcased in a residential unit operated by the “Oberland” housing cooperative. Interested individuals are cordially invited to learn about and test the devices with no obligation. Admission to the events is free, but advance registration is requested.

The event is organized by the “AI4ActiveAge” project, a collaboration between academic institutions, companies, and initiatives from the region.

Their goal: to use feedback from test users to further develop existing technology, enabling people to live safely and independently in their own homes.

In addition to the “Oberland” housing cooperative and Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe , various companies and initiatives from the region are involved; the scientific leadership is provided by Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, TQ Systems, uCore Systems, and the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz.

For many people, it’s important to live independently for as long as possible as they age. But what should you do if you do end up needing help or find yourself in an emergency?

These days, children and grandchildren often live far away, and many older adults live alone.

The concept of the “senior-friendly home” offers a solution:
By using simple, modern technology, independent living in old age becomes safer. Smoke detectors, sensors that detect falls and automatically trigger an alarm, and even automatic emergency door openers for emergency responders—all of this is possible today.

In addition, technical aids for greater living comfort will be showcased in Ebersbach-Neugersdorf. Networked heating controls or window and temperature sensors aren’t just of interest to older adults. Modern technology can even facilitate engagement and social interaction: In addition to well-known devices like VR headsets and the PlayStation, visitors can also make an interactive robot cat purr.

“We are convinced that with today’s digital assistance systems, we can help people lead a self-determined and fulfilling life in their beloved homes for as long as possible,” explains Prof. Dr. Reiner Wichert of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.
