Inauguration of a Unique Thermal Storage Test Facility at the Zittau Power Plant Laboratory

When people talk about the energy transition, the focus is primarily on the generation and distribution of electricity. However, the fact that a large portion of the energy consumed in Germany is used for heating and process heat is sometimes overlooked. The project“Development of Unpressurized Heat Storage Systemsfor the Efficient Use of Industrial Waste Heat— EDWENIA”addresses this issue and, through the development of dual-medium heat storage systems, will make an important contribution to the so-called “heat transition.”
Work on the EDWENIA project began in the summer of 2023 with an intensive material screening process. Now, the ceremonial commissioning of the new heat storage test facility is laying the groundwork for future tests of practical heat storage demonstrators. It is unique far beyond the state’s borders. On March 25, 2024, you will have the opportunity to take part in guided tours of the test facilities.
The new test facility was funded by grants from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. On the HSZG side, the research project is supported by the Life & Technology Alliance.
