Why study Applied Nursing Sciences at the HSZG?
The Nursing Professions Act is currently being revised: Medical science, practical instruction and highly complex nursing care will become reserved tasks for academic nursing staff - this is exactly what we qualify you for!
Interested students with a university entrance qualification should ideally apply to one of the cooperating companies one year before the start of their studies and conclude a training contract there.
Enrollment at the university takes place with the university entrance qualification and by presenting the training contract via our application portal.
Confirmation of enrollment must be submitted to the company in order for the training contract to become legally effective.
The course starts in the last week of September or the first week of October with the introductory week at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, followed by alternating semesters of study at the university and practical periods in various companies in outpatient and inpatient acute and long-term care.
The semesters usually run as follows:
The course is completed with a Bachelor's degree. The state examinations to obtain the professional title "Pflegefachfrau" or "Pflegefachmann" take place as part of module examinations spread over three semesters.
Your degree course has a modular structure and offers two paths to a degree: a full-time option over seven semesters for school leavers and a shortened part-time option for nursing professionals who have completed vocational training. Both options cleverly combine theoretical and practical phases. The course of study gradually introduces you to the complex requirements of modern nursing, starting with biomedical fundamentals, basic nursing practice skills and the development of the nursing profession.
In the higher semesters, you will deepen your knowledge in specialized areas such as nursing science, evidence-based nursing, public health and nursing management. The part-time option is specially tailored to working professionals - you study in blocks and can continue to work in your profession. The diverse practical placements in various areas such as hospitals, nursing homes and outpatient care are particularly valuable. The degree is completed with your Bachelor thesis, in which you work on a research topic relevant to practice and thus make your own contribution to the further development of nursing.
Please note: For professionally qualified students, the course only begins in the third semester.
With the Bachelor's degree program in Applied Nursing Science, you will earn two degrees within 7 semesters (3.5 years): The Bachelor of Science degree and the state professional license as a nurse.
From 2025, a shortened course of study will be possible for those with professional qualifications.
A major advantage of your nursing studies is the close integration of academic and practical qualifications. Your theoretical studies will be supplemented by training in the nursing simulation laboratory (Sim-/SkillsLab) and practical assignments with cooperation partners in outpatient and inpatient care.
As the course is dual, you will receive a training allowance for the entire duration of your studies, similar to vocational training at vocational schools for nursing.
The generalist degree program integrates the traditional professions of nursing, geriatric nursing and paediatric nursing. After completing your degree, you will be able to professionally and independently care for, treat, support and advise people at all stages of their lives. You will identify individual care needs and integrate other healthcare professionals.
In addition to basic scientific, nursing and personal skills, you will acquire skills for the development of new innovative nursing approaches.
Your degree program is the first in Saxony that has already been completely converted to the new legal situation. This means that you have clarity about the curriculum for your entire course right from the start.
Practical guidance
You qualify prospective nurses by providing expert support and guidance. You design learning processes, impart evidence-based nursing knowledge and promote the link between theory and practice - a skill that you acquire directly during your studies.
Intensive care
You will care for people in critical health conditions and take on extended medical tasks. You will work with highly complex medical equipment, recognize life-threatening situations at an early stage and make decisions independently as part of a multi-professional team.
Care management
You will develop quality standards, optimize work processes and manage change processes in care facilities. You will take on management responsibility and help shape the strategic direction of healthcare organizations.
Outpatient care
You promote people's independence in their home environment. You develop individual care concepts, advise relatives and coordinate complex care networks to ensure optimal care at home.
Medical activities
You will take on medical activities in the specialized areas of diabetes, wound care and dementia. You will carry out assessments independently, create individualized treatment plans and adapt treatment concepts based on evidence. Thanks to your academic qualification, you will be able to responsibly take on medically delegated activities such as medication adjustments for diabetes, complex wound care and therapy management for dementia-related illnesses.
Care advice
You are the contact person for those affected and their relatives in complex care situations. You create individual care plans, coordinate multi-professional networks and provide support in navigating the healthcare system.
