Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences | Application deadline: September 16, 2026

At Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science / Department of Computer Science, as part of the CySAF project funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space, is seeking to fill a position at the earliest possible date (until December 31, 2026, for 20 hours per week, 40 hours per week starting January 1, 2027) as a

Research Assistant (m/f/d)
- Reference: 50-2026 AI/ML CySAF -

to be filled on a fixed-term basis until September 30, 2027.

In the CySAF research project, key processes in IT security assessment within the context of critical infrastructure are supported by AI in the form of large language models (LLMs).

The position involves research and development work on explainability (XAI) for LLM-based assessment methods, in particular contributing to the design, implementation, and evaluation of transparent AI algorithms for linking security requirements (e.g., BSI Basic Protection) with IT infrastructure data (Work Package 5), including methods for the measurable verification of model-based judgments (such as perturbation-based and game-theoretic attribution methods). Implementation will primarily be carried out in Python and will include integration into the existing processing pipeline (including graph database and GraphRAG integration of the semantic data model). As the project progresses, the role will also include contributing to the integration of the developed modules into a coherent system architecture (Work Package 7), including testing and validation. The development of concepts and models must take the EU AI Act into account. The results will be scientifically prepared and published.

The following knowledge and skills are required

  • A master’s degree in computer science or a related field,
  • practical experience in the field of AI as well as with transparent AI approaches (XAI),
  • Experience in AI validation,
  • good knowledge of Python as well as knowledge of another programming language,
  • in-depth knowledge of AI, particularly large language models (LLMs), as well as an understanding of the limitations of AI,
  • Good knowledge of software development (including Git, Docker, and UNIX environments),
  • Fundamentals and advanced practical knowledge regarding the applicability of XAI,
  • integration of XAI methods into LLM-based systems,
  • Willingness to engage in scientific publishing, science communication, and knowledge transfer,
  • Contribution to publications, expert articles, and public appearances,
  • Good knowledge of German and English.

We expect you to have

  • an analytical mindset and structured problem-solving skills,
  • willingness to familiarize yourself with the requirements of critical infrastructure,
  • a high degree of teamwork, conflict management skills, and communication skills,
  • willingness to travel.

We offer you

  • an interesting and challenging field of work,
  • flexible and family-friendly working hours in accordance with the applicable employment agreement,
