“Biomass to Power and Heat,” taking place June 6–7, 2018, in Zittau, focuses in particular—though not exclusively—on the use of solid biomass for energy in decentralized combined heat and power plants. This encompasses the entire process chain—from the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of biomass, through the conversion process for generating useful energy, to the issue of residues. The variety of technical approaches in this area is enormous; however, thermochemical biomass gasification will be a key focus of the event.

Experts and interested parties will have the opportunity to present their experiences, findings, and scientific work and to discuss them together. In addition to developing cooperation with neighboring countries to the east, this year’s event will place special emphasis on the contribution of decentralized biomass energy to the restructuring of the energy system and employment in the Lausitz lignite region, and thus on the following question: How can coal-fired power plants be replaced by numerous decentralized renewable energy plants with comparable security of supply?
