Energy - always new ideas!
The topic of the 13th edition of "Business meets Science" is more topical than ever.
For the 13th time, the organizers hosted the evening event “Business Meets Science”; the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG), the General Entrepreneurs’ Association of Zittau and Surrounding Areas e. V., the Dresden Chamber of Crafts, and the Zittau and Görlitz offices of the Dresden Chamber of Industry and Commerce. In good weather, entrepreneurs, government officials, and university professors gathered at an interesting location—the HSZG’s Zittau Power Plant Laboratory (ZKWL) on the grounds of Stadtwerke Zittau.
Reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly—that’s how the energy supply should be structured in the future. This was also the overall theme of the evening.
Following welcoming remarks by
- Bert Handschick (Chairman of the Board of the AUV Business Association) and
- Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kratzsch (Rector of HSZG), and
- Rocco Deckert, the new Technical Managing Director of Stadtwerke Zittau GmbH
, the approximately 80 event participants were able to learn about the university’s research work at the Zittau Power Plant Laboratory during a tour that included two stops:
The Thermo-Mechanical Energy Storage System (TMS Battery) – This storage system uses water as its cost-effective working and storage medium. If the project is successful, the technology developed here will enable energy to be stored for many hours in the form of water vapor and then released as electricity or heat as needed. No so-called “rare earth elements” are required. The goal of this project, based at the Institute for Process Engineering, Process Automation, and Measurement Technology (IPM) at HZSG, is to provide an environmentally friendly electricity storage system for the sector coupling of electricity and heat.

The latent heat accumulator - here, heat is stored in the form of a melting medium at a constant temperature. In the heat storage test field, the researchers are developing comparative key figures for heat storage systems from systematic measurements. This will make it easier for planners to find the right thermal storage systems for customers in the future.

Based on many years of established expertise, the scientists at the HSZG tackle energy and environmental engineering problems. The spectrum ranges from the optimization of new technologies for the provision of electricity to highly efficient recycling technologies and automation technology through to biotechnology.
Some of this research paper is also reflected in the business areas of Stadtwerke Zittau; a mutually beneficial collaboration. The following two stations of heat supply and heat distribution for the city of Zittau also played a role in this evening at the Stadtwerke:
- Where does Zittau's heat actually come from? Information on the energy transition at Stadtwerke.
- Exciting technical solutions - the Stadtwerke's expertise in energy distribution.
Next year, the 14th edition of the event series on innovation and technology transfer will take place in the extension building of the Upper Lusatian Plastics Center of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) on Theodor-Körner-Allee in Zittau.
As early as 2009, the Dresden Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) established a program in the region that brings together entrepreneurs and researchers so they can get to know one another and engage in professional discussions on-site—with the dual purpose of, on the one hand, easily fostering connections between businesses and the university, and on the other hand to stimulate innovation and technology transfer in the region, while also offering solutions with an eye toward the skilled labor situation and the next generation of leaders.
Each year so far, a different academic department or laboratory has been featured to give the business community—as well as employees from government agencies and institutions—an insight into the work being done at the university.
