Your first weeks at the Faculty of Management and Cultural Studies - find out more here!
You've just finished your A-levels or defended your Bachelor's thesis. Now you want to start studying at the HSZG, but you're not sure what the upcoming winter semester at your faculty has in store for you? You can find answers to your questions in our Q & A.
Starting your studies is a challenge: a new apartment, a new city, new flatmates and being away from your familiar surroundings. As if all this wasn't enough excitement for the start, the coronavirus pandemic is still raging and raising questions about your studies. One answer is certain: we are focusing on presence - so come to Görlitz! The future Dean of the Faculty of Management and Cultural Studies, Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Falk Maiwald, provides further answers.
"Both events are planned in presence. Of course, we will have to take any current restrictions into account. But we are already crisis-tested and have thought through and planned scenarios for various cases. The faculty's welcome and information event will take place on September 27 at the campus in Görlitz. Planning is still underway for the university's central matriculation ceremony, but this much can already be revealed: it will take place in Zittau and there will be shuttle buses. Oh yes, and a week later there will be another mega festival in Görlitz - the #campusopenair."
"Like every year, we have an entire induction week. During this week, each degree program welcomes its new students personally in separate face-to-face events. In addition to the course directors, the individual degree programs are represented by the teaching professors and teaching staff. They welcome the first-semester students and provide important information, orientation and motivation."
"The preliminary course in mathematics is offeredfor Bachelor's degree courses in the Faculty of Management and Cultural Studies. In terms of content, the main focus here is on refreshing relevant basic knowledge from the Abitur. The course will take place at the Görlitz campus from 20-24.09.2021."
"Various events are held during the induction week. We rely on a mixture of face-to-face and virtual events and involve the students interactively. At on-site events, new students bring their own end devices with them and can therefore test all the services directly. In this way, they receive direct support if they have any questions. Further tutorials and assistance will then also be available to students online."
"As the introductory events take place in person, there are of course plenty of opportunities to get to know each other. In addition, the student council organizes events such as film evenings, the city game or the brewery tour. There are also other opportunities within the degree courses to get to know each other better. For the Bachelor's degree course in Tourism Management, for example, there is a two-day excursion. But other degree courses are also planning their own kick-off events."
"The Rectorate has decided that we want to plan and carry out the winter semester in face-to-face teaching. This is very good news, as it will allow us to quickly familiarize students with the new system on the one hand and ensure the all-important social contact between students and lecturers on the other. However, we will combine the positive experiences of digitally supported teaching with face-to-face teaching and thus increase the quality of study."
"Yes, that's right. But it's inexpensive and relatively easy to do in our charming Görlitz."
"As part of the induction week, we are planning a very detailed and helpful introduction to digitally supported and online teaching. We have created various face-to-face formats for this purpose. In these, students will familiarize themselves with the technology and the special features of e-learning. They also receive helpful tips on how to combine online and face-to-face teaching."
"If you have any questions, students and prospective students are best advised to contact the academic advisors on the course websites by email or telephone. Of course, they can also contact the faculty secretariat of the faculty, where they will be forwarded to the relevant contact person."
Thank you very much for answering my questions, Prof. Dr. Maiwald.
These are the tailor-made plans that you first-year students will face in the winter semester. Of course, the existing plans always have to be adapted to the current situation. Find out more on the website of your faculty!
