Visions of the future

Guest article by Manuel, WKB 14:On Saturday, May 14, it started again - the doors of the former kindergarten "Blockhaus" in Görlitz were opened for a week. The festival for contemporary art ZUKUNFTSVIONEN celebrated its tenth anniversary this year and I was right in the middle of it.[caption id="attachment_704" align="aligncenter" width="516"]Das Blockhaus The Blockhaus[/caption]Hello, my name is Manuel Rees and I'm now in my fourth semester studying culture and management in Görlitz. I completed an apprenticeship as an event manager before my studies and this is the second time I've been involved in this student project. Last year I took over the artist support and artist acquisition. ZUKUNFTSVISIONEN is a voluntary exhibition project in Görlitz, which is supported by the vision of revitalizing unused and empty buildings and filling them with a culturally diverse supporting program. This year, the project team consisted of students from Faculty MK and Faculty S. The principle of the festival, to realize an exhibition in an empty building every year, is a great challenge but also the appeal of the project. This year, the choice fell on the "Blockhaus" kindergarten, which has been vacant since 2012. The festival for contemporary art took place this year from May 14 - 21. The motto of this year's festival was "Being Conscious."Over 1400 guests enjoyed 13 exhibiting artists as well as a unique supporting program consisting of concerts, readings, performances and much more. Thanks to the cooperation with the Zittau / Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, some selected lectures were included in the ZUKUNFTSVISIONEN2016 program. The collaboration with Görlitzer Art was rated as equally beneficial by the audience.[caption id="attachment_701" align="aligncenter" width="800"]Kunst im Blockhaus Art in the Blockhaus[/caption]The ZUKUNFTVISIONEN project is a student project. It is a very good addition to the sometimes dull everyday life at university. It's one of those projects where you can try things out. You will reach your limits. But it was precisely this borderline experience that was incredibly important for me. Realizing that you can actually do much more than you think. Due to the fact that both my year and the year below us are allowed to go into the Erasmus semester at the same time, there is a gap in the cultural managers who have always led the project. I see this as an opportunity, but I would still be happy if students from other faculties could be found to run the project again next year.
