Statement of the StuRa on the guidelines for university operations

Dear students,

on Wednesday, April 29, the university adopted its "Guidelines for university operations from 04.05.2020". We would like to clarify our position on this in the following email.

We welcome the reopening of the university for students from May 4 and the continuation of internships and individual classes / courses in compliance with strict hygiene regulations. We are also pleased that it is once again possible to borrow specialist literature from the library and use printers. We also welcome the fact that examinations can now be held temporarily in the form of video conferencing.

We think it makes sense that a timely retake and repeat examination period has been decided, but we also hope that a two-week notice period will be observed.

We welcome the fact that as many students as possible should be able to study normally. Instead of currently only following the maxims of "studyability, examinability and thus eligibility for recognition of the SoSe 2020", we would like to remind the Rectorate that it was emphasized at the beginning that no student should be disadvantaged by this situation.

We miss a binding answer and regulation in the guidelines regarding the recognition of the standard period of study for the SoSe 2020, a solution for free attempts and the suspension of deadlines for repeating examinations. The stamina and flexibility of students is limited.

Students who, for example, are committed to their fellow human beings in this special situation, have financial problems due to the loss of their own job or that of their parents, are doing childcare alongside online teaching, do not have the technical requirements to participate in online teaching or generally have problems with the current forms of online teaching have not yet received an answer to the urgent problems and challenges.

We would like to point out that the LRK (Saxon State Rectors' Conference) has decided that each Saxon university can decide for itself what regulation it makes regarding the standard period of study. Suspending the standard period of study for the summer semester 2020 will relieve these groups immensely and the associated obligations towards institutions such as the BAföG office.

We request a review of the suspension of the standard period of study by the university management, as well as a public statement with a prompt decision and an explanation of how this is justified. Particularly in view of the fact that other Saxon universities (HTW Dresden [1], TU Dresden [2], TU Chemnitz [3]) have already made similar decisions in favor of students. We explicitly refer to TU Dresden, which in our view has responded to some of the demands from the student list of demands "Solidarsemester 2020", which is also supported by the student council of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.

We criticize the fact that the Student Council, as a representative of student interests, was not involved in the drafting of the guidelines, even though these largely concern students. We would welcome it if the Rectorate took the interests of students more into account in future decisions.

If you have any further questions or problems, please contact us by email at stura@hszg.de, on Facebook or Instagram. Statement of the student council on the guidelines for university operations

-------------------------------------------------------------
English

Dear students,

on Wednesday, 29th April, the university published its "Guidelines for University Operations from 04.05.2020". In the following mail we would like to clarify our position on this.

We welcome the reopening of the university for students and the continuation of practical training and occasional courses in compliance with strict hygiene regulations. Furthermore we are happy that the borrowing of specialist literature from the library and the use of printers is possible again. We also support the fact that examinations in form of video conferences are now temporarily possible.

We think it makes sense that a prompt repetition test period has been decided, but we also hope that a two-week announcement period will be guaranteed.

We welcome the fact that as many students as possible should be able to follow a normal study schedule. Instead like the current path of pursuing the maxims "studyability, testability and thus recognition of the spring semester 2020", we would like to remind the Rectorate that it was emphasized at the beginning that no student should suffer any disadvantage as a result of this situation.

We miss a binding response and regulation in the guidelines on the recognition of the standard period of study of the spring semester 2020, a solution for free attempts and the suspension of deadlines for retaking examinations. Students' stamina and flexibility is limited.

Students who, for example, are committed to their fellow human beings in this special situation, who have financial problems due to the loss of their own job or that of their parents, who provide childcare in addition to online teaching, who do not have the technical prerequisites for participation in online teaching, or who generally have problems with the current forms of online teaching, have not yet received an answer to the urgent problems and challenges.

We would like to point out that the LRK (Saxon Rectors' Conference) has decided that each Saxon university can decide for itself which regulation it will make regarding the standard period of study. A suspension of the standard period of study for the spring semester 2020 will relieve these groups immensely and the associated obligations to institutions such as the BAföG Office.

We request an examination of the suspension of the standard period of study by the university management, as well as a public statement with a timely decision and an explanation of how it is justified. Especially in view of the fact that other Saxonian universities (HTW Dresden [4], TU Dresden [5], TU Chemnitz [6]) have already made corresponding stipulations in favor of the students. We explicitly refer here to the Technical University of Dresden, which in our opinion has responded to some of the demands of the student demands catalogue "Solidarity Semester 2020", which is also supported by the student council of the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz.

We criticize that the student council, as a representation of the students' interests, was not included in the elaboration of the guidelines, even though the majority of the decisions taken concern students. We would welcome the Rectorate would take more account of the students' interests in future decisions.
