As part of the Objective 3 project "Saxon-Czech Library Network - Information without Borders", regular events are held to promote the exchange of knowledge and experience. The taster visits offered by Saxon and Czech partner libraries make a significant contribution to this.
Such an event took place for the second time from September 30 to October 2, 2014. The Academic Library in Liberec (Krajská vědecká knihovna v Liberci) invited colleagues from the University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology, the University Library of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň (Univerzitní knihovny Západočeské univerzity v Plzni) and the University Library of the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences to its headquarters in the Liberec Center.
The event was opened by Ms. Konvalinková, director of the local academic library. In her brief introduction, she presented the history and everyday life of the institution. These topics were then covered in detail in a lecture by Ms. Petrýdesová and illustrated during a subsequent tour of the library.
The library building, which opened in 2000, was built on the site where the Reichenberg synagogue stood until 1938. A synagogue is also integrated into the new library building, which bears the name "Building of Reconciliation". The participants had the opportunity to visit both facilities.
Over the course of three days, they got to know the work processes in all specialist departments in the main building as well as in a branch library.
The Scientific Library in Liberec is very different from the other project libraries in terms of its organization and funding, as it is an institution that acts as both a scientific and a municipal library. Therefore, it offers its services and educational programs not only to university members and people interested in science, but also to the general public.
These special features gave the participants a very good introduction to the discussions about differences in the respective library operations, about the function of the library in the process of promoting knowledge and about its role in modern society.
