Science internship at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences

Molecular biotechnology and chemistry for grade 11 students

Six students interested in science visited the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences from February 22 to 26, 2016. As part of various upper secondary school internships, five students from Oberlandgymnasium Seifhennersdorf and one student from Berufsschulzentrum Zittau worked on various questions and practical laboratory experiments in the fields of molecular biotechnology and inorganic chemistry.

Under the guidance of

and laboratory assistant Corina Lorenz, the students carried out laboratory experiments on the cultivation of microorganisms and the differentiation of bacteria using rapid biochemical tests in the first part of the practical week. They were also able to isolate DNA from various food products (lasagne, salami and minced meat) and then analyze the origin of the meat (pork, beef or horse) using a polymerase chain reaction.

In the second division of the practical, Dipl.-Chem. (FH) Matthias Jeschke gave the students a brief insight into various areas of inorganic chemistry. First, they determined various wet chemical parameters from a water sample they had brought with them, such as the pH value, the total hardness and the contamination of the water with organic substances. The week-long practical course was rounded off with an excursion into chemistry's bag of tricks. There was great enthusiasm when the students were able to prepare and carry out numerous experiments with dry ice, liquid nitrogen and some smoky fire experiments themselves.

In addition to the interesting and varied work in the laboratories and the very good supervision by the lecturers involved, the students also explicitly praised the lunch in the Zittau canteen. They will not soon forget their week of practical training at the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, especially as they were allowed to take the protective goggles they received home with them as a small souvenir.
