MDR visits the "Applied Nursing Science" course at the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences

Nursing studies as the key to the future

The nursing care of tomorrow needs academic specialists

The care sector is facing a decisive turning point. In order to meet the challenges of a shortage of skilled workers, an ageing society and increasing demands, qualified academic specialists are needed. The MDR devoted a visit to the "Applied Nursing Science" course at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) to this important topic.

Insights into studying: practical relevance and prospects

The MDR team, represented by editor Mr. Winterbauer, took time at the Postplatz campus to learn about the special features of the course first-hand. One highlight was the nursing simulation laboratory (Sim/SkillsLab), where students can train in practical scenarios and hone their skills under realistic conditions.

Mr. Winterbauer was impressed by the openness and professionalism of the students and held discussions at eye level. The main topics were the reasons for studying nursing, the choice of Görlitz as a study location, the structure of the course and career prospects. It became particularly clear: The monthly allowance during the course is a bonus, but by no means the main reason for choosing this demanding degree course.

Care as a social responsibility

The course is headed by Prof. Dr. Martin Knoll, who is considered a driving force behind the modern design of the course. It was under his leadership that the dual study model was developed, which combines state professional accreditation as a nurse with an academic degree.

"The nursing of tomorrow requires more than practical skills - it requires scientific understanding, interprofessional thinking and a clear vision for the further development of the profession," says Prof. Dr. Knoll.

The MDR's visit once again underlined the importance of academic nursing studies for the region and beyond. The discussions with the students made it clear that the course not only offers a sound education, but also sharpens the focus on social and ethical issues.

As one student aptly put it: "Nursing is not just a profession, but a vocation that deserves a sound academic foundation."
