"In all things, success depends on the preparations"

Whether root functions, differential calculus, electrical circuits, induction, stoichiometry, redox reactions, centripetal force, or the law of mass action—participants had a wide range of courses to choose from to refresh their knowledge. Zittau, as a campus for technical degree programs, offered its usual wide range of courses in mathematics, electrical engineering, chemistry, and physics. At the Görlitz campus, a preparatory mathematics course was offered specifically for students in the Faculty of Managerial and Cultural Studies.

The “Come In” Weeks in Numbers

With a total of 167 students, the courses were good in demand, as they have been in recent years. 102 of them took part in the introductory math course in Zittau, and 58 in Görlitz. The introductory physics course attracted 60 eager learners, while the courses in chemistry and electrical engineering each had 31 participants. With the exception of first-year students in the humanities, one in three students attended one or more of the preparatory courses.

The “feel-good factor” is important to us

In addition to the necessary foundational knowledge, general well-being is likely just as important for a successful academic career. This is the focus of our recreational programs, which are organized in collaboration with the Student Council and offer a colorful mix of various excursions and activities. Whether it’s a cozy evening by the lake or on campus, a guided tour of Zittau or Görlitz, a trip to Liberec, or a hike through the nearby mountainous landscape—spending time together provides opportunities for conversation with like-minded people while showcasing the many possibilities of this welcoming region.

The city tours were very well attended. In Zittau, participants marveled at the vaulted cellars in the historic city center, among other sights, while Görlitz, as the easternmost city in Germany, shone with its Gründerzeit charm.

During the trip to Liberec, participants got to experience hands-on science. At iQLANDIA Park, they were able to explore numerous natural phenomena through play and experimentation. Afterward, they explored the third-largest city in the Czech Republic. The day came to a fitting close with authentic Bohemian beer.

As in previous years, a highlight was the Zittau pub crawl. Led by student volunteers, the groups visited the city’s most popular pubs and the trendiest burger joint as part of a full evening’s program. The convivial evening wrapped up at a shared destination: the DeZi Bar.

The workshop “Strengthening Your Strengths” was also very popular. The new students were shown tools for self-organization, stress prevention and management, as well as effective study techniques. In addition, there will again be a series of workshops during the academic year titled “Semester-Long Group Programs at the HSZG.”

Bottom Line

Once again this year, the “Come In” Weeks can be deemed a success. For several years now, they have been an important component of teaching at HSZG. They have made the transition into this new phase of life easier for many young people who have chosen to pursue an academic education in Zittau or Görlitz.

We thank Ms. Franke for leading the preparatory course in chemistry, Dr. von Schäwen for leading the physics course, and Ms. Paetzold for teaching the preparatory course in electrical engineering. A heartfelt thank you also goes to the teaching assistants and all the hardworking volunteers from the StuRa and SbS.
