Research Associate AQVA HEAT III (m/f/d) - Keyword: 20-2025 Automation

Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences | Application deadline: 16.06.2025

At the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Institute of Process Engineering, Process Automation and Metrology (IPM), the Department of Metrology/Process Automation is working on a joint project funded by the Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB) entitled "AQVA HEAT III - Demonstration and scientific monitoring of a year-round thermal utilization of surface waters as a heat source through the use of vacuum liquid ice technology in local and district heating networks" as soon as possible for a position (1.0 FTE) as a

Research Associate AQVA HEAT III (m/f/d)
- Keyword: 20-2025 Automation -

to be filled for a limited period until 28.02.2027.

Are you convinced that the energy transition can succeed with the help of innovative automation? Then join our team! Make a contribution to the successful implementation of the project "AQVA HEAT III" project and join us in advancing the state of the art in science and technology in the field of automation of energy technology processes.

As part of the project "AQVA HEAT III" project, you will be involved in the automation of energy technology processes and complex test systems. The job includes the following tasks in particular:

  • Creation of concepts for the control technology structure, this refers to the planning and development of the architecture of a control technology system

  • Analysis of requirements (identification of process requirements and definition of objectives with regard to functionality, safety, scalability and efficiency,

  • Design of the logical and physical structure of the control technology system (hierarchical division into control, monitoring and field levels, integration of programmable logic controllers (PLC), operating and monitoring systems (HMI/SCADA), sensors and actuators) and definition of the communication paths and protocols (e.g. OPC UA, Modbus TCP/UDP),

  • Planning the hardware and software (control hardware, e.g. Wago, development environment, e.g. Codesys and control system) and defining any redundancy mechanisms for greater reliability,

  • Development of concepts for monitoring, controlling and regulating the processes (data flow and processing within the control system and creation of visualization strategies for operators),

  • Development of concepts for securing the control system against cyber attacks and system failures,

  • Realization and implementation of concepts (e.g. programming of PLCs) and

  • Creation of technical documentation for the I&C system.

The following knowledge and skills are required

  • Completed university degree in the field of automation and mechatronics,

  • Practical experience and specialist knowledge in handling the automation and control of energy technology processes,

  • Experience in working with programmable logic controllers, in particular from the manufacturer Wago,

  • Very good knowledge of the development environments Codesys 2.3, Codesys 3.5 and e!cockpit or comparable,

  • Ability to program (IEC 61131-3) and optimize automation solutions,

  • Knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. Python, Java), ideally for the integration or expansion of automation systems,

  • Experience with database solutions for recording, storing and analyzing process data,

  • Ability to create concepts for control technology structures and knowledge of communication protocols and network integration (e.g. OPC UA, Modbus TCP/UDP),

  • Understanding of the physical and technical fundamentals of energy technologies, such as thermodynamic processes, power plants or renewable energies,

  • good written and spoken English and

  • proficiency in text and data processing programs and confident handling of digital media.

The following are also desirable

  • Knowledge and experience in the implementation of modern control strategies,

  • Experience in the use of cloud services for process control or monitoring and

  • Experience in the use of edge computing technologies for decentralized data processing in automation systems.

We expect you to

  • a committed and team-oriented way of working

  • goal-oriented and independent implementation of work tasks,

  • Willingness and interest in further professional and personal development,

We offer you

  • an interesting and challenging field of activity,

  • flexible and family-friendly working hours within the framework of the applicable service agreement and part-time options,

  • personal and professional development opportunities through targeted further and advanced training,

  • attractive social benefits (company pension scheme, annual special payment, capital-forming benefits),

  • company health management with offers for workplace health promotion and the opportunity to use a job ticket.
