From KIA (sandwich-style) degree course to professorship

An engineer with a passion for knowledge transfer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Patricia Stange in conversation.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Patricia Stange has been a professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the Department of Electrical Engineering since January 1, 2025. Her teaching area includes information technology with a focus on electromagnetic compatibility. In this interview, she talks about her path to Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, her enthusiasm for teaching and research - and about playing the saxophone as a creative outlet.

Prof. Stange, what stages have shaped your career to date?

I studied electrical engineering at the KIA and then did my doctorate at the International University Institute Zittau. I then worked for many years as a research assistant at the HSZG. In between, I taught as a teacher at a UNESCO project school and was also active in adult education - including at the IHK Education Center Dresden and at the HSZG itself. I have also been involved in the development of teaching materials, for example for Westermann Verlag.

What motivated you to pursue an academic career?

I am passionate about passing on knowledge and encouraging students to think critically. The transfer of knowledge and the application of research in practice is particularly important to me - whether through classes / courses or specific projects. Teamwork in research projects motivates me time and again to develop and implement innovative ideas together.

What brought you to the HSZG and to Upper Lusatia?

Upper Lusatia is home for me. I've had close ties with the region since I was a child. The fact that I am now able to teach and research at the HSZG is a bit of a return for me and at the same time a new professional start with a lot of creative freedom.

What are your main areas of work at the HSZG?

I am currently devoting myself intensively to teaching and building up targeted collaborations with regional companies. In terms of content, my work focuses on the fundamentals of control engineering and electromagnetic compatibility, an area in which I see great potential and a need for research.

How do you design your classes / courses to inspire students?

I try to make the course content tangible by using practical examples from everyday life. I also actively incorporate students' questions into the courses and work with motivating teaching methods that encourage them to think and participate.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in an academic career?

Be brave and network! Seek out targeted discussions with professors and contribute your own research ideas. Science thrives on exchange.

Do you have a personal tip for the exam period?

Start studying early and regularly review the material. Look at the topics from different disciplines and look for connections and similarities.

And finally, a few personal insights: what are you reading at the moment?

I'm currently reading "The Big Five for Life" by John Strelecky, a book that inspires you to reflect on your own goals and values.

Do you have any hobbies that people don't immediately associate with you?

I play the saxophone. For me, it's a wonderful balance to technology and everyday university life.

What things should never be missing in your office?

Coffee machine, calculator and my laptop. I'm well equipped with these.

And your favorite place in the area?

Definitely Lake Olbersdorf - a beautiful place to relax.

Thank you very much for the interesting interview, Prof. Dr.-Ing. We wish you continued success at the HSZG.
