About the degree program

Electrical energy forms the foundation of our modern society and is becoming a crucial topic for the future in view of the energy transition. The Diplom degree program in Electrical Power Systems prepares you to master the complex challenges of a sustainable and secure energy supply. You will develop solutions for an energy system that functions reliably despite climate change, limited resources and increasing demands.

Skills for the energy world of tomorrow

During your studies, you will acquire in-depth knowledge in these forward-looking areas:

  • Renewable energy generation and smart distribution grids
  • Electrical transmission systems and high-voltage technology
  • Energy storage and grid integration
  • Power electronics and electromagnetic compatibility
  • Protection and control technology for resilient grids
  • Digitalization and IT security in energy systems

You will learn how modern energy grids are operated reliably and how renewable energy sources can be optimally integrated. Thanks to the practical approach with laboratory work in small groups and direct supervision, you will not only understand the interrelationships theoretically, but experience them first-hand. An engineering internship in the 6th semester strengthens your professional skills before you lay the foundation for your career with your Diplom thesis in the 8th semester.

The choice is yours!

Design your studies - In the electrical power systems degree program, you have the choice between:

What is a KIA (sandwich-style) degree course?

Our dual KIA (sandwich-style) degree course (cooperative study with integrated training) is particularly good for those who want to combine theory and practice in their studies. In addition to theoretical knowledge, you will receive practical training and, at the end of your studies, not only a Diplom certificate, but also a skilled worker qualification. This makes you an attractive all-round package for potential employers!

Course content

Your degree course in electrical power systems is systematically structured and provides you with both theoretical foundations and practical skills. In the first four semesters, you will acquire fundamental engineering knowledge in areas such as mathematics, electrical engineering, computer science and physics. This foundation is consolidated through practical exercises in small groups so that you develop not just knowledge, but real understanding right from the start.

From the fourth semester onwards, you will delve deeper into the specialist areas of electrical power systems. You will deal with high-voltage technology, electrical machines, grid operation and renewable energies. The compulsory elective modules allow you to set your own focus - from storage technologies and IT security to intelligent grid management. The sixth semester serves as an engineering internship in which you gain your first professional experience and make contacts. In the seventh semester, you will gain advanced knowledge about smart grids and renewable energy sources before crowning your studies with your Diplom thesis in the eighth semester.
