"Open University Day"

All organizers and participants were satisfied with the response to the "Open University Day" on 4 June 2016.

The visitors came from all over Saxony, Brandenburg and the Berlin area. Among them were numerous prospective students who had specifically made the journey and wanted to see the study conditions at the university location  Zittau for themselves.

Around 250 prospective students took advantage of the university's offer and informed themselves in detail about the study opportunities and the study conditions, especially in the STEM courses.

The Rector, Professor Friedrich Albrecht, opened the "Open University Day". He pointed out that the university would like to offer young people in the region in particular career prospects with its diverse and promising range of courses. "As a university, we are interested in retaining young, intelligent people for companies, but also as young academics for the university itself," he said. He also encouraged the young visitors to make active use of the offers in the event program.

The short lectures on offer and, above all, the numerous laboratory tours relating to engineering and natural sciences, computer science and economics were met with great interest. Prospective students also made intensive use of the opportunity to talk to students from the individual degree courses themselves and exchange information about everyday life at their university.

This year, too, the organization team came up with a whole host of activities. As part of the introductory lecture, the university's new video podcasts, created by pupils from Zinzendorf-Gymnasium Herrnhut with the support of the Lions Club Görlitz and the Saxon Training and Testing Channel (SAEK) in Görlitz, were presented and awarded prizes.

For all those who wanted to get active themselves, the "MINT Mobility Trail" was available for the first time. The Faculties of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Natural and Environmental Sciences invited visitors to take part and take a knowledge test at various stations. At the end, every participant received a trail pass.

First-hand information was also available at the KIA (Cooperative Studies with Integrated Training) stand in Zittau, where numerous interested students gathered. KIA employees and KIA students from the university's training workshop were happy to answer questions about this now very popular form of training. Next door, the university's apprenticeship training stand provided an insight into the content of practical vocational training as an "electronics technician for devices and systems".
