"Impulses for teaching"

Recently, all faculty members at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences received a printed brochure titled “Ideas for Teaching Practice at Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences.” Timed to coincide with the university’s 25th anniversary, it explores the core process of TEACHING from a university pedagogy perspective.

This brochure can thus help newly appointed professors find their bearings. But even “veterans” and adjunct instructors can benefit, as the field of higher education pedagogy is filled with numerous terms—some of them new: competency-based teaching, shift from teaching to learning, flipped classroom, blended learning, e-assessment, soft skills, massive open online course (MOOC), and many more.

This already makes it clear that teaching does not end with imparting a solid foundation in the subject matter, but that it should also be competency-based, motivating, inclusive, individualized, and geared toward professional qualification. Furthermore, it is standard practice in good teaching for students to acquire so-called soft skills—such as learning strategies, time management, and teamwork—which make their studies easier and help them transition into their professional careers.

A culture of quality in teaching is fostered through regular internal and external evaluations of teaching as well as continuing professional development in higher education pedagogy for faculty members.
